You plug a USB-C hub into your laptop, connect the monitor, and get a black screen—even though your mouse works. Before buying another adapter, check the complete video path. A connector that carries USB data does not, by itself, establish that the computer can send a display signal through it.
Quick take: Confirm the laptop port supports video, match the hub’s output to the monitor’s input, and check the resolution and refresh rate as a pair. Then check charging separately. A long list of ports cannot compensate for a missing capability at the computer.

1. Identify the exact laptop port
Start with the specifications for your laptop’s exact model, including its generation. Look for an explicit display-output capability on the USB-C port you plan to use. If the computer has several similar-looking ports, confirm which one the specification describes rather than assuming they are interchangeable.

“4K” is only part of a display specification. A listing may pair it with a particular refresh rate, and the supported combination can depend on the host. Decide what output you need, then look for that full combination in the hub documentation and your computer’s display specifications.
For a monitor you already own, check its manual for the capabilities of the selected input. Do not assume a headline specification applies equally to every socket. Keep the cable’s stated capability in the same checklist, especially if you are reusing an older cable of uncertain specification.
A useful buying note is one sentence: “I want this laptop, through this hub and cable, to drive this monitor at this resolution and refresh rate.” That gives manufacturer support a concrete question if the documentation leaves a gap.
4. Treat charging as a separate requirement
A hub’s power-input rating and the power available to the laptop are not necessarily the same. Compare the stated laptop output with your computer’s charging requirements, and check whether the charger and cable are included. Do not calculate your purchase around a headline wattage without reading its meaning.
This is especially relevant when replacing a familiar desk setup with one convenient cable. Make a separate note of your current charger and the laptop’s recommended power supply. A monitor connection that works does not automatically mean that the new arrangement meets your charging needs.
